Questions to Ask a Home Care Provider

Any provider will tell you their care is compassionate. These questions help you find out how care will actually work for your family.

About the caregivers

  • How are caregivers screened? Do they have a police vulnerable sector check?
  • What training do they have for the care we need, for example dementia or transfers?
  • Will we meet the caregiver before care starts?
  • Will we have the same caregiver each visit?

About reliability

  • What happens if a caregiver is sick or can't make a visit?
  • Who do we call after hours, and will a person answer?
  • How will you keep us updated on how visits are going?

About cost and flexibility

  • What is the hourly rate, and are evenings, weekends or holidays different?
  • Is there a minimum visit length or number of hours?
  • How much notice do you need to change or cancel a visit?
  • Can hours increase or decrease as needs change?
